i miss making atc's. they were a lot of fun but it aways ended up stressing me out. why? i don't know. but i'm buzzin' to get to the bottom of this brain twister. not too much makes sense anymore. fear of fear. what an oxymoron. i bounce back and forth between the macro and micro-vision of myself. and i'm not just lookin' at myself- i'm hardcore staring. the way you can't turn away from an accident...you pretend you're not lookin' while your peripheral vision gobbles up as much gorey info as it can- mumbling 'poor bastard'...or something like that.

nope. still can't find the time or desire to get back into blogger here. spending time at flickr, as usual,- as well as vox. i prefer vox to blogger because of its connection with flickr and the fact that its quite artist friendly...and of course very easy to navigate.

however, since this ol'blog here will pop up if perhaps an admirer or highschool buddy googles my name- i must put up a new pic and kindly ask those that seek me to proceed on to flickr...and vox..guess i should scare up that link.

oh yeah- i should mention that i got an awesome new cam corder today- YAY!!!!!! i should ALSO mention that one can post videos to vox...;o)

I wish I blogged more. I'm just so darn hooked on Flickr- which reminds me I need to renew my membership or all my art goes bye-bye! I'm still VERY involved with my altered books, but i recently hosted a Valentine swap for mini atc's which are a very tiny 1.5" by 2.5", but BIG FUN. So here's a sneak peek at those teeny-tiny Valentine's! I must add that i've been on my very low carb diet for almost 3 weeks now. Today i ate eggbeaters mixed with creamcheese,cinnamon, and Splenda and just a little butter and salt and tried telling myself it was cheese cake. Sound gross?? Well, when you've been as deprived as i was you'd eat it,too! heehee!

I can't believe Blogger finally updated their damn selves! Yay!!!! We shall see if it works out with the photo uploading...

This is a collaboration for the Library project with Brian Raszka. Brian and I sent old books that we started to alter leaving the rest for the other person. I sent him "The Wisdom of Confucious". He sent me an old vintage charm on mathematics! My fave subject! not really.

I really was/am not happy with what I did to the back cover here. He started it off with the image of the snake and bird which I altered beyond recognition. really. These are three of the many stages I went thru with the back cover. The present version is the one on the far left. You can see I lost the snakes tail and the clown..oh yeah and a couple small black birds- both not Brians. I love how I painted the "8" which is a cardboard stencil. The purples and deep blues look awesome in person, but over all I'm not thrilled with it. I guess I can't be thrilled with everything I make or I won't learn anything...aarrghh.

I'm still having a blast with "the Library Project" on Flickr. The fun won't last forever, but when I'm done there will be something lined up waiting. With art there is always something next. Cuz creativity never ends. Thank Goodness I have a healthy hobby.

Here's an odd piece I had fun with in one of my latest altered books. I'm submitting it to Illustration Friday for "insect". I didn't intend to turn him into an insect, but since that was this weeks theme I decided that was the direction he was going in. Now he is a bug and he seems to be happy with the choice. He seems to be big enough that the birds won't eat him. Yuck.

Page 3 is on top and 2 on bottom. Its a spread I did about just a little bit of anger I have toward an ex fiance. I did the entire spread spontaneously. So I was surprised to see all the anger come out of my subconcious. I cut out random words and sentences and pasted them down quickly so that I did not have time to make decisions. Page 2 even includes his name! And the picture of the man in the center which says "the master story teller"-that's him alright. Its funny because the picture is actually of L.Ron Hubbard. I didn't realize Hubbard was a big science fiction writer before he wrote his latest novel which he turned into a religion- his religion. Sheesh! What narcissism. My ex was a narcissist. If anyone has been in a relationship with a narcissist they know what I'm talkin' about! :) Scarey stuff. We all have narcissistic qualities to one degree or another, but a real narcissist can be a very, very dangerous person. Thank God for the therapeutic value of art! Not to mention how much fun it is!

Self Portrait Tuesday II: All of Me

Here is my second installment for Self Portrait Tuesday. I'm doing a series of this piece in which I used charcoal,pastels,graphite, and photo shop. The theme is "All of Me" so I'm focusing on my recovery from addiction. Addiction in all its ugly aspects. Actually, my last SPT submission showed my blatant addiction to icecream. This one has a little more depth....so far. It's called "Introspection I". It, obviously, involves me looking inward. It's pretty interesting cuz I've done self-portraits most of my adult life and I actually had a shrink analyze some of them. I must admit he was right on the money. I should dig some of them up to scan'em. They're pretty sad, but u can see how I start to get better as I progress on my journey to recovery/sobriety.
SO- on that note this introspective series will look back on the pain and joy (but MOSTLY pain) that came with attaining what seemed to be elusive: sobriety. This has definitely taken up what seems to be "all of my life" to one degree or another.Now, I'm excited about diggin up some of that past work- its been a while since I've seen it!!! Best to get it on disc anyway!
At this point in my sobriety I've been having a lot of sense-triggered memories that hit me at all different times and definitely too often- whether it be a smell of a laundry detergent or a certain song or a picture of someone or even a physical touch. And the memories are very strong and vivid. My pain doctor who is acting as my shrink until I get another one told me that memories that are triggered by smell are the strongest and most common. Pretty cool,huh?? I must admit that this whole remembering stuff isn't necessarily a pleasant experience so expressing and documenting it through art will help me deal with it. I'm sure the doctor will approve.:)
Has anyone had a problem with blogger distorting color? It happened with my last spt submission and with one of these photo's. What is supposed to be a dark blackish color turned out to be this super neon purple....That's why I shrunk the first picture here...hee hee ha ha ho ho...

Here's my watercolor, ink, and photo shop "Chair" for Illo. That's my PJ sleeping on top. He's a permanent fixture there. I'm still playing/struggling with photo shop. I got Elements 2 weeks ago and yeterday had CS2 installed. Wowzie! I REALLY want to take a course in it. Maybe I should get a book?...anybody have any tips??? Anybody know of any good instructional books for learning the lanuage Photo shop???

I've always been known to take the icecream experience to new limits. This was one of those times.
I'm experimenting with ways I can visually express January's version of Self Portrait Tuesday. I've started with teen angst and its effects on my hair (I'm 34 now). Bright "manic panic" red was one of my favorites. Photo shop helped recreate the color! Photo shop and I are still getting to know each other.
I found the hair dye in a store in the village called "manic panic" which was also the name of the dye. There were many colors, but red was my fave. Holy Crimson! I didn't know I could get more than one photo to a post! OK Blogger and I are still in the "getting to know each other" phase, too. Now I must ge back to my watercoloring and bathroom cleaning. Hmmm..... well, I guess this is my first Self Portrait Tuesday. This was not what I uploaded, but it is very interesting...and considering how much time it took me to find my way around Photo Shop I think I'll just leave it as is and call it a day. This is a fairly recent picture of me- a little less than a year ago. The theme for SPT is "personal history". Now that I think of it I can fiddle with it more and have a different version of it for next Tuesday.
I have reddish brownish hair, but as a teen I experimented with hair dye's I found in the Village(NYC) and on south street in Philly. The hair dye was called "manic panic" and came in all kinds of bright primary colors and some were actually neon. So actually the glowing purple does kind of represent the plethora of crazy colors that I put in my hair. Not to mention make up, clothes, and tinted contact lenses. The red color is photo shopped in and is actually right on the money. I wore my hair this bright red color for a couple of my teen angst driven years. What great fun it was! My friend Emily and I would take a bus to south street listening to the Sex Pistols on our boom box. Our hang outs there were the punk stores Skinz and Zipper Head. Zipper Head is still there today...I think. Skinz was my favorite. Emily and I liked the guys that worked there- Danny and Barry. I cannot believe I just remembered that. I liked Danny. He sold me the red "manic panic".
And then of course there is the ice cream. Ice cream and I are close. We spend a lot of time together. We are rarely apart.

On my way to bed. I just felt like posting something before I'm off to dream land. I've done my bookmarks, Valentine atc's, some random projects, and, of course, lots of fiddling with Photo shop. The Valentine atc's were mini's and they had to include parts of playing cards- a very interesting challenge. I'll post them after they're all swapped out. I really like how they turned out. O.K. I am EXTREMELY tired. Here's a cute little watercolor goldfish I did for a birthday card for my cute little one-year-old nephew, Johnnie. It's a little crooked or off kilter cuz my boyfriend scanned it for me. Poor guy....Good night.

Yes, I'm finally posting an Illo..and hopefully I'll follow suit and do an edm challenge! I just bought the infamous "Photo shop"! SO SO SO SO MUCH to learn!!! I've been fiddling away, learning a little at a time. I must admit I've gotten myself a nasty cold from staying up too late- not being able to pry myself away from the computer!! They should put a warning label on Photo Shop warning folks of these nasty side effects!

I'm focusing on drawing again after a 2 week dry spell! I impulsively changed templates on my blog after having a few accidents with HTML. I ended up with a purple hamster on a wheel right under my blog title. I really want to get that "blog's illustrated" thingee back up on the new template since I lost it from switching templates!!! ATC's and therapy

Yuck! It's been a sad week. I'm still recovering from having my Farley put to sleep. And I have wicked PMS. I intend to be back with the challenges next week. I did crank out some ATC's for some private swap's. The ATC's I did were "mini" ATC's which are 1.5 by 2.5. I just love that itty bitty canvas and having the freedom to do whatever I want with it however I want...it gives me permission to experiment, be silly, and make mistakes in infinite medium's. Very therapeutic. I painted these sad itty bitty "blue" daisie's, cut them out, then glued them down with collage paper, sticker's, and massive amounts of ultra fine glitter(which doesn't pick up well on the scanner). I believe one of my hairs is stuck in there as well.

I posted the link to my blog for my Illo submission instead of just the link to the post...Oh well, you'll just have to scroll to the post under this! :O) I just drew some items in front of my PC for my first blind contour. Next week I'll take on the challenge. I see that the majority of submissions to Illo, BC, and sometimes edm use Photoshop. I have not yet ventured in that area, but I plan to get it soon!As for my blindcontour drawing, I did add some trivial shading after the fact. If it wasn't so late I'd have a little fun with Prisma colored pencils. I read a review about the new lightfast Prisma's. I'm hoping ACMoore carries them. For all u Brits-ACMoore is an art store. It does not specialize in fine arts, but does carry the basics. Pearl- an art store with 3 floors of every kind of art supply u could dream of- is over the bridge in Philadelphia- about 40 minutes from where I live. I'm going to ACMoore because they're having their seasonal Moonlight Madness sale- 25% off everything! It's time to stock up! I'm sure you can appreciate the euphoria of new art supplies! Yahoo! :o)

My very first Illo!

This was very fun cuz I got to do a little experimenting. Art is truly exciting because the possibilities really are limitless. There's so much I would like to learn since I've never had any formal training- except for a drawing class at night school at a local high school. I have gotten a lot out of some wonderful art books including books by the author/artist Claudia Nice(I love her books!) and the classic, Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain by Betty Edwards. I just ordred the workbook to go along with the original book. I also have a couple books by Mark Kistler. His books are geared towards kids, but I found them very helpful..I'm still a kid at heart! He did a show for kids a while back. Oh and there's Danny's book which I am waiting on to be delivered from Amazon. OK so the topic for Illo was "night" and this mixed media piece is my interpretation! I had a lot of fun with it! It's pen, watercolor, sequins, rubberstamping, beads....I used a sharp scissor to scrape out rain, but I'm not sure if it's visible in the picture. Please, tell me what u think! OK night night.

I'm so happy I finished my assignments and/or challenges! As you can see this is my "folds" submission. After years of just using my pen for scrapbooking and crafts, it's refreshing to use a pencil and try my hand at recovering that inner artist tht drown in a bottle years ago. Some of u know my story of wanting to get that "flow" of creativity back that I had when I was drinking some 6 years ago. I REALLY feel like I've tapped into that "flow"- so now I can pick up where I left off. I owe this to my yahoo groups (everyday matter's in particular!) that gave me a reason to pick up that pencil and practice a little everyday. Now my confidence and my way of seeing has improved over these past few weeks!!! YAY!! What a great feeling- and ONLY another artist knows how this feels- "We are alive when we create."

11.- I dated Radiohead's road manager. One of the fun thing's I got to do was hang out at MTV's beach house in the Hampton's during a recording of live version of "Creep" by the pool side. It was actually more like I was a groupie! -a small price to pay for my 15 minute's!
12.- Hmmmm....I LOVE coffee with a passion! I've always tended to like thing's that weren't good 4 me.
13.- My dad is the conductor of the southern jersey philharmonic.
14.- I played violin for many year's. I always had to keep the nails on my left hand short in order to play. I despised practicing.
15.- Almost everything I've ever done caught up to me at age 34. This is why older people tell younger people "to not get old!". (Not that 34 is old, just older)
16.- I lived in Alaska for one year.
17.- As a kid I loved Shaun Cassidy and the Bionic man.
18.- My boyfriend and I still think farts are really funny.
19.- My favorite male actor is Benicio Del Toro. He's also a painter.

Well, I'm getting back into doodling, that's a start. I am so resistant to using pencils! Since I'm at a stage where I'm relearning as well as getting comfortable with my drawing I REALLY need to use pencil as opposed to pen! Can anybody else relate to this dilemma? I think I'm just devoid of discipline as I am in most area's of my life at this stage of existance. I really do my best to stay clear of anything outside of my comfort zone...actually, I do think I'm making some tiny baby steps...Just do it..this is what my "inner coach" is saying ..or shouting.

Symbolic drawing about the first step

I could not get the whole page scanned of either of the pages I wanted to post. This is an " OH SO VERY SYMBOLIC" expression of myself and the first step or myself and sobriety. It was done a month before 9/11/01. Obviously, I was struggling with getting clean. I will try again to get the whole page in there. I used ink, markers, gel pens, silver and gold markers, and that glitter glue crap. I also have a quote out of the AA Step book: "It was a statistical fact that alcoholics almost never recovered on their own resources...In AA's pioneering time, none but the most desperate cases could swallow and digest this unpalatable truth. Even these 'last gasper's' had difficulty in realizing how hopeless they actually were. But a few did- laying hold of AA principles with all the fervor with which the drowning seize life preserver's" I'd like to go into some of the symbolism's, but I need some shut eye. I will mention one. There is an orange life preserver floating on the right of me in the picture...and my hand is NOT grasping for it. The life preserver symbolizing sobriety...I was obviously not ready for sobriety...as I gaze down towards all the drug paraphenalia by my feet on the ocean floor. Yep, it wasn't quite my time...I am sober today.

I had to finish off these bookmarks here for a swap that's due on Halloween. I chose an asian theme. Although, I didn't necessarily "choose" asian- I just sat down in a big puddle of art supplies and out came 6 asian themed bookmarks. Right now I'm struggling with the fact that my art supplies seem to overtake the house. At one point I had a very organized work space which is the office that my fiance and I share. But the art supplies have since multilplied leaving little room to actually work on a project...so I bring a bunch of supplies into the living room so I have room to work and not feel stifled by the clutter. Well, I've decided to try and get creative about organizing the office. I haven't quite started yet...I'm trying to sike myself up for this very involved undertaking. I despise clutter, yet order tends to elude me. Just one little thing at a time...I get so overwhelmed by the whole. This has ALWAYS been my dilemma.

Dragging my feet...literally

I haven't produced much of the way of art recently. I'm supposed to be practicing daily- Actually, I doodle at least every day. I've been doing lot of doc appointments. I, apparently, have not escaped my years of drinking and worse without aquiring any health issues. Turns out I have peripheral neuropathy. I have diminished sensation as well as delayed sensation in hands, feet- pretty much everywhere. i thought it was just a side effect of a med I was taking, but I learned differently after going to the doctors after falling for the 4th time for no apparent reason. I have no idea how bad it is. It may all be reversable...I'll find out after some more tests. For right now I'm taking plenty of B vitamins and eating as healthy as possible. My diet used to consist of candy bars and coffee...I know, I know! Anyway, the thing that scared me most was my ability to draw, paint, etc...That's what really set the ball in motion as far as really taking this stuff seriously. It was just so hard to imagine having all these problems at 34!I have changed SO MUCH since last year. Last Halloween I was thin, healthy....and eating candy bars and icecream with coffee for breakfast...O.K. I'm seeing the pattern here- Don't eat healthy- Don't get healthy- and now I don't be healthy! Well, I'll be doing the right thing from now on. Here's a couple of paintings I did for an apartment I lived in a couple years ago- it was my Taupe period- everything taupe! Now they're in my office.

Hooray! My blog obeyed and did what it's master told it to do! Yahoo!Hooray for me! Since I have yet to do a specific group challenge I'll browse around and see if I find something I'd like to post to commemorate this occasion...O.K.-this is a WTA miniature(1.5 by 2.5) atc. WTA is winner takes all-basically, whose ever # is picked wins and gets to have everyone make them an atc in their chosen theme(s).. ..well, anyone who wants to participate. It was fun finding teeny tiny little pictures to collage.Behind the woman I placed a faucet nozzle that obviously reads "Hot". Then I used Prisma colored pencils to make it look as if there were fire behind her

I think I should just about give up with trying to get this blog to do what I want it to do. It refuses to put my photo and other profile info up with my profile. All this time I could've been doing something productive...well, its been a ruff day. Time to put it all behind me, get some sleep, and start anew tomorrow. When I don't draw or create some kind of art I get this gnawing feeling in my gut like there is something I'm lacking. Think I'll do a little doodle and then plan to work on my masterpiece tomorrow. Good night. Oh and I'm going to put up a photo of an abstract-themed (mini) atc I did for a "mini" atc group. The size is 1.5 by 2.5!

I've been trying all night to figure out how to get my picture posted with my profile. I did all the hello and picassa stuff and even was able to post pictures with blogs....but for the life of me I could not get a frikkin' photo of moi up with my profile..ARGHHHH!!! Anyway, this is my art blog. Today has really SUCKED ASS...and I feel better for saying it...after all this is my journal! I should focus all this frustration into some art. I won't go into today's drama which included an algae eater's life being at stake...maybe another time..another day another post..it'll be a good laugh!
